STROUD, GLOUCESTERSHIRE, UNITED KINGDOM, March 31, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — A Gloucestershire man is hoping to raise millions of pounds for charity if he reaches his Kickstarter funding target of £50,000 for the Shiffter, a new invention which aims to make cleaning toilets ‘considerably less disgusting’ than using a toilet brush.

The idea is a simple one – instead of using a toilet brush to clean the loo, you use a jet of water.

Kam Mistry, inventor of the Shiffter, who has been working on the project in the evenings and weekends around his day job, said:

“This product isn’t rocket science, however it has the potential to become commonplace in hundreds of millions of homes across the globe. Let’s face it, does anyone enjoy using a toilet brush? Does anyone like picking up a used one? Instead of using a toilet brush and bleach to clean a toilet you just pick up the Shiffter, which is filled with water and sits next to the toilet, and use it to jet wash the bowl clean. The feedback from everyone who has seen it has been great as they can immediately see how it will make a currently unpleasant chore much easier and cleaner. It’s also more friendly to the environment as you end up using less bleach, toilet cleaner and water.”

Obviously talking about cleaning poo from a toilet bowl is something that we generally don’t discuss at the dinner table, and this is something Kam has thought about, but he sees it as an opportunity rather than a hindrance. In a world where video is easy to use for demonstrating how something works, it isn’t so easy for the Shiffter, as no-one wants to watch a movie of something so personal. To get around this, a short animation has been created to show what the product does and then, using chocolate spread, the Shiffter’s effectiveness is shown in a brief video.

Kam added:

“For obvious reasons, cleaning toilets isn’t something we talk about on a daily basis, and the same goes for illnesses related to digestive and intestinal disorders such as colitis, Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome and bowel cancer – to name but a few. Millions of people’s daily lives are blighted by such conditions but we don’t talk about them, so I’m hoping that giving 20% of profits from the product to related good causes will change people’s perspective and understanding about gut-related illnesses. It's about providing an opportunity to be more open about these issues which can be extremely demoralising.”

Kam is already in discussions with charities, including Crohn’s and Colitis UK, about their potential involvement.

Whilst a light-hearted approach is used on the Kickstarter website, he is hoping to raise serious amounts of money for charities with the patent pending product.

He added:

“With over a billion households in the world, the market is huge, and don’t forget that many homes have more than one toilet. On top of that there are toilets in hotel rooms and businesses too. The potential is enormous, especially if the patent application is successful.”

Phil Staunton, managing director of D2M, the product design company based in Cheltenham, which designed the Shiffter, said:

Whilst Kam intends to initially give 20% of profits to good causes, he wants that figure to rise as sales improve over time, so the potential to raise tens if not hundreds of millions of pounds for related good causes is very real, if he can reach his funding target to go into production.

The Kickstarter project is currently live and ends on Tuesday 2 May. If the funding target of £50,000 on the crowdfunding website is reached, the Shiffter will go into production in the summer and be available to buy shortly afterwards.

A UK patent is pending (Patent Application No. 1613313.4) with overseas applications due to be filed in the next few weeks.

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH , USA , March 31, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — A new study by researchers at the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute in Murray finds that combining information from routine blood tests and age of primary care patients can create a score that measures future risk of chronic disease.

This simple risk score, termed the Intermountain Chronic Disease Risk Score, or ICHRON, can predict the first diagnosis of the most common chronic diseases — which include diabetes, kidney failure, coronary artery disease, heart attack, heart failure, peripheral vascular disease, atrial fibrillation, stroke, dementia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease — within three years, the study found.

Researchers say ICHRON predictions are 77-78 percent accurate in identifying patients who’ll be diagnosed with a chronic disease within three years of testing. The impact of the study could be extensive, since more than half of the adult population in the United States suffers from one or more chronic diseases, and projections show a 40 percent increase in chronic disease cases in the next 10 years.

Results of the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute study were presented at the American College of Cardiology's 66th Annual Scientific Session in Washington, D.C.

“Our goal was to create a clinical tool that’s useful, easily obtainable and doesn’t slow the work-flow of our clinicians,” said Heidi May, PhD, MSPH, principal investigator of the the study and a cardiovascular epidemiologist with the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute.

Dr. May and her team studied a primary care population consisting of both male and female patients who had no history of a chronic disease. ICHRON was developed among one set of primary care patients, then tested in a second, independent primary care population.

Among females, those with a moderate ICHRON score were three times more likely to be diagnosed with a chronic disease compared to those with a low ICHRON score, while those with a high ICHRON score were 11 times more likely to be diagnosed.

For males, those with a moderate score were 5.6 times more likely to be diagnosed with a chronic disease within three years, and those with a high ICHRON score were 14 times more likely to be diagnosed compared to those with a low ICHRON score.

“We hope ICHRON can be used to help identify patients who are at a higher risk for a chronic disease and therefore need more personalized care. For example, if a patient received a high ICHRON score, the clinician could plan to see the patient more frequently or be more aggressive with treatments,” she said. “Or if the patient had a low ICHRON score, they could potentially be seen less often or their care providers could forego a test they were considering.”

Researchers see three major potential benefits:

– First, patients will live healthier lives as they avoid — or proactively learn to manage — chronic diseases.

– Second, they’ll be better able to avoid serious complications that often result from unmanaged chronic diseases, such as heart attacks or strokes that result from high blood pressure or unmanaged diabetes.

– Third, patients’ healthcare costs will decrease dramatically.

“It’s a lot less expensive to help patients improve their lifestyles than it is to treat a heart attack — and that’s in addition to all of the physical and emotional benefits that result from healthier lifestyles,” said Dr. May. “The ICHRON tool supports Intermountain Healthcare’s system effort to use preventive medicine to improve people’s health and control healthcare costs.”

ICHRON is designed to be calculated by a hospital’s electronic health record at low incremental expense.

Runtime Announces Bluetooth 5 Support for Apache Mynewt

Next Generation Embedded Networking Meets Free Open Source

SANTA CLARA, CA, US, March 30, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — At Bluetooth World 2017, Runtime (http://www.runtime.io/) announced support for Bluetooth 5 for Apache Mynewt, an open source OS for constrained, embedded devices. The first ports are to the Nordic Semiconductor nRF52832 and nRF52840, the most recent addition to the market-leading system-on-chip nRF52 series.

Bluetooth 5 extends the capabilities of the already ubiquitous Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) protocol spec: these enhanced capabilities include increased range and throughput options; larger frame sizes, advertisements, and advertising extensions; and a “connectionless” mode of operation. This increased functionality underpins the practical application of both IPv6 and mesh networking and true end-to-end application-layer security. Taken together, enhancements in Bluetooth 5 push the envelope of addressable use cases and markets from “consumer” to “commercial and industrial”.

Apache Mynewt is an open source OS and application platform for embedded. Traditionally, connected product companies were stuck with integrating a mishmash of OS components: kernel, file systems, protocol stacks, boot loaders, and other proprietary binaries. The result was a bespoke “OS” that required costly ongoing internal maintenance and, often, incumbent technical debt. Apache Mynewt aims to provide to embedded developers all of the “undifferentiated” components of a general purpose OS with easy and modern build-and-package management. Apache Mynewt is completely open and is designed from the start to be managed: pre-deployment on the workbench and post-deployment in the field. Apache Mynewt includes the world’s first commercially-applied OIC 1.1 application-layer framework (aka IoTivity-constrained), bringing a RESTful environment to the true edge of the network.
